An all-night service too far

THERE are all kinds of services on offer these days aimed at making our lives easier and saving precious time.

But it is hardly surprising that the latest business scheme to be launched in Burnley has been roundly attacked by councillors and health professionals.

The idea that people who may already have been out for a night’s drinking should be able to ring for more booze to be brought to their doorsteps up to 5am in the morning is pretty unedifying.

Add to that the fact that this “service” will also deliver condoms and cigarettes as well as chocolate and you have something that will plainly be no help whatsoever to the Save a Million Years of Life campaign by NHS East Lancashire to do something about shamefully high death rates spurred on by people drinking to excess and smoking too much.

Many would say our society is already awash with cheap alcohol which is far too readily available and the detrimental effects of binge drinking in terms of crime and violence as well as ill health, are all around us.

The idea that people can go home from an evening out and have yet more booze delivered in the early hours of the morning makes this a service too far.
