A MAN with a 30-year history of mental illness killed himself when he realised he would be readmitted to hospital because of his condition, an inquest heard.
The hearing was told Roy Barnes, who had kept his illness secret from many of his family and bosses for 33 years, was found hanging in the garage of his home in Long Acres Drive, Whitworth, on August 16, last year.
He had twice tried to kill himself by stabbing himself in the stomach and taking an overdose the hearing was told.
His wife Patricia Barnes told the hearing how the 71-year-old had continually battled his illness, which was brought on through stress at work, for more than 30 years.
Coroner Richard Taylor recorded a verdict Mr Barnes took his own life.
