ALMOST £100million is to be spent tackling pollution in the River Ribble.

United Utilities bosses say the river contains about 30,000 cubic metres of contaminated water.

A £95million scheme is being planned to stop sewage overflow into the river by building a 6.2 mile tunnel from Preston to Clifton Marsh.

Construction is set to get underway by April and finish by March 2011. Speaking at a recent county council meeting, United Utilities representatives told residents there would be a full consultation on the plans.

The plan was drawn up in 2003 but has only just been approved by the Environment Agency.

It said disruption to traffic would be “inevitable”, but insisted holdups would be kept to a minimum.
