A local councillor is setting up an opposition group to fight plans to introduce academies to the city.

Respect Councillor Michael Lavalette, pictured, is calling for a public meeting to set up the Anti Academies Alliance following the decision by Lancashire's Education Authority to merge two Preston high schools and replace them with the city's first academy.

Coun Lavalette claims that parents were not consulted about the plans to merge Fulwood and Tulketh high schools. Coun Lavalette, whose daughter, Olivia, 14, attends Fulwood High School and Arts Centre, said that there was no parental choice as the first they heard of it was via reports in the media.

The town centre ward representative added: "Parents have not been informed about this, and I am really concerned as I don't agree with academies."

He said: "I will be inviting all parents to attend a meeting and we will be putting pressure on the county council to ensure that the private investor does not influence the curriculum and entry levels."

NUT Lancashire County secretary said: "I have been in touch with Coun Lavalette and I can understand why he is concerned as no details had been shared with us or most others involved in education."

Deputy chairman of Lancashire County Council, Alan Whittaker, said: "Mr Lavalette seems to be looking for an issue where he can gain local publicity and he needs to do his research ifully before going off on one."
