The Lancashire Record Office on Bow Lane in Preston will be closed to the public on Tuesday March 25.

The closure, after the Bank Holiday Easter Weekend, will allow staff training in preparation for the planned major redevelopment project to extend and improve the service which is hoped to begin next year.

Lancashire County Council has recently submitted an application bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a £4.8m lottery grant to restore and fully refurbish its county Record Office.

In addition there would be a five year development programme aimed at engaging with new audiences.

The Lancashire Record Office (LRO) currently houses archives and documents on Lancashire dating back to the 1580s, more than 300,000 wills from 1533 to 1858, as well as details of the county's glorious manufacturing past.

It attracted nearly 13,000 visitors in the last year, including 250 from overseas, with more than 164,000 people accessing its website.

Admission to the Lancashire Record Office is free.
