AN MP has lifted the lid on his years as a rebellious punk, battling against fascists and listening to the Sex Pistols.

Greg Pope re-lived his years of spiky hair and stage invasions after a survey of MPs' favourite albums.

Mr Pope, whose constituency covers Hyndburn borough and parts of Haslingden, picked The Sex Pistols' Never Mind the B****cks, a stark contrast to Ribble Valley MP Nigel Evans's choice of pop act Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album.

Rossendale and Darwen MP Janet Anderson plumped for Led Zeppelin II, while Blackburn's Jack Straw chose The Beatles' classic Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

MPs across the country were asked to pick their favourite by the London-based British Library to coincide with a new exhibition on number one albums from the last 50 years.

Pendle MP Gordon Prentice and Burnley's Kitty Ussher did not respond to the survey.

Mr Pope, now 45, said he would have picked punk legends The Clash's self-titled 1977 album.

But as that did not make number one and was, therefore, not on the list of options, he went for the Sex Pistols album instead, which contains songs such as God Save The Queen, Anarchy In The UK and Pretty Vacant.

Mr Pope revealed: "Never Mind The B****cks changed the face of music forever and meant we never had to listen to Boney M again!"

"I went to see The Clash at King George's Hall and it changed my life. I went from having long hair and flares to spiky hair and jeans.

"I think I am the only member of Parliament to have invaded the stage at a Clash gig. I danced to Police and Thieves with the band.

"But I grew my hair back by the time I graduated so my mum didn't know!"

Mr Pope said he thought it was "great" that teenagers rebelled and found themselves before settling down.

He added: "What's the point if you want to be part of the Establishment when you are young?

"I have an iPod and it has lots of punk and I still enjoy listening to it."

Mr Pope was not very impressed with Mr Evans's choice. He joked: "I can't believe that from 50 years of number one albums he chose Rumours.

"I think he should hang his head in shame."

Mr Evans was unavailable for comment.
