A SHAMED doctor who was struck off after allegations of sex attacks is being hunted by police over new claims that he abused a patient.

Dr Raja Wannaku-Korale was kicked out of the profession in January after the General Medical Council investigated reports that he allegedly raped and indecently assaulted two women while working as a GP in Wigan.

He was found guilty of serious misconduct, despite being earlier cleared by a court of the sex attack allegations.

The fresh allegations were made by a woman in her 30s who claimed Korale sexually assaulted her while he was working as a locum at a surgery in Little Hulton 12 years ago.

The alleged victim went to police after reading about the decision to remove Korale, aged 65, from the medical register.

Greater Manchester Police are working with Interpol to establish whether the ex-doctor, formerly from Eccles, is in the UK or his native Sri Lanka.

A police spokesman said: "We are investigating new allegations of sexual assault and would welcome any information on his whereabouts.

"We have also been obliged to pass on to the GMC details of the latest allegations."

At the January hearing held in Korale's absence because he said he was too ill to fly home from Sri Lanka the GMC also ruled that Korale was guilty of "catastrophic failure" in not referring a cancer patient to hospital.

He was first struck off in 1988 after he was found guilty of gross misconduct because he wrongly prescribed controlled drugs to several patients.

He was reinstated by the GMC in 1992. Then, in 1995, he went on trial accused of indecently assaulting two women patients aged 18 and 19 but was found not guilty.

In 2003, he appeared in court facing charges of indecent assault and rape of two women patients. The case collapsed due to concerns about the prosecution evidence. The judge ordered the jury to return not guilty verdicts for all charges except one of indecent assault, which he ordered to lie on file.

In 1997, Korale was also found guilty of gross misconduct by the GMC after failing to help a dying man who collapsed outside a surgery in Salford where he was working as a locum. But he was "admonished" rather than banned on that occasion.

l Anyone with information about his whereabouts is asked to call police on 0161 856 5126.
