A PARAMEDIC who lost control of his car and crashed while rushing to work has been fined £300.

Andrew Wood, aged 29, of Lower Brook Close, Horwich, admitted driving without due care and attention at Bolton Magistrates Court.

On November 18 last year, Wood was travelling south on the A666 in his Volkswagen Golf when he took the Raikes Lane exit to get to Lever Edge Lane.

He lost control as he tried to negotiate a bend, skidded across the road, careered into a crash barrier and then hit a road sign.

The court heard he caused extensive damage to his car and to the barrier.

Wood, who previously had a clean driving licence, told the court he worked for Greater Manchester Ambulance Service.

"I was rushing on my way to work and didn't take into account the conditions of the road when taking the corner," he said.

The court heard a driving ban could cost Wood his job.

Presiding magistrate Peter Jones told him: "We aren't just making a snap decision. We realise this is your livelihood at stake.

"We aren't going to disqualify you today."

As well as fining Wood, Mr Jones imposed four penalty points on his licence and ordered he pay £35 prosecution costs.

He added: "We take it this is an eye-opening event for you, Mr Wood, and we hope never to see you again."

As he left court, Wood replied: "I hope never to be here again."
