THE public should be overjoyed that we are to be spared having to pay £20million for a new super sized police farce.

Since the proposed mergers were first announced by Charles Clarke, just before he ceased to be Home Secretary, I have spoken against them at every local police meeting.

Most forces will not have wasted tens of thousands of pounds, unlike ours, because they were not as keen to put the tree up just because Charles Clarke said it was Christmas. The merger would have cost at least £20million and would not have put one extra officer on the beat in any of our wards.

The way to better policing is through smaller locally accountable forces and not via ever larger and more remote empires. In the words of a previous Prime Minister, we should "rejoice, rejoice, rejoice!"
