Nile pans had been installed at a Rochdale shopping centre following an apparent misunderstanding of Muslim requirements for water in ablution.

It was understandable as, in reality, this was the only solution but the effect this has brought is a segregated use of these facilities.

The Nile pans or ‘squat toilets’ are alternative ceramic structures that are uncomfortable and the persons using them are prone to smear with splash-back which is disadvantageous even to Muslim hygiene conscience.

These toilets may be the choice for installation in mosques but in my opinion the common ‘sit on’ version are superior in use and splashing is limited, making them more suitable for everybody.

Intelligent use of paper tissues can still achieve a desirable comfort and cleanliness, leaving the ablution at a later time.

Please do not bring the Nile pans here on the back of Muslim demands.
