ACTION Group members read with interest the report (LT, February 2) advising that security is to be stepped up at parks and cemeteries within the borough, following concerns about thefts and boy racers wrecking parks.

Whilst it is commendable that the council have responded quickly to the concerns raised, is there not a separate major issue which has been conveniently ignored? Almost three years ago, many memorials were tested. This work was necessary to ensure the safety of the people employed by the council to do work in the cemetery and also to ensure the safety of the public. Around 3,000 headstones were found to be in a dangerous condition and what exactly has the council done to ensure that the safety element was addressed immediately?

Not a lot, it would appear. There are still many memorials with band-and-stake awaiting remedial work. Some stakes have now become detached with the passing of time and have been left lying on the ground.

Where does this leave the safety of council staff and the public, and why has the council not taken action to either reattach or remove the fallen support?

Pleasington Cemetery could have been restored many months ago by the generous gesture of one monumental mason, an offer that came free of charge to the council.

This offer has not to date been accepted. When can the public expect to see each and every failed headstone repaired to the acceptable standard. Any time soon, or the 12th of never?
