FURTHER to Sally Henfield's article re Accrington and Hyndburn (June 1). I have always found it hard to understand why the name of Accrington & District was dropped and replaced by the title of Hyndburn, for the simple reason that whenever Accrington is mentioned, one of the things which it is always associated with is the Accrington Pals.

If for no other reason, this is why the name of Accrington instead of Hyndburn should be used.

The fact that St John's Church is packed even after 91 years for the annual Accrington Pals Commemorative Service, is some indication of the deep feeling felt not only by the people of Accrington, but also from other local towns from where many of the Accrington Pals came from.

If the change is made it would be a fitting gesture if the Mayor of Accrington laid a wreath at the Accrington Pals Memorial with the wording: To the Accrington Pals, the change from Hyndburn to Accrington has been made for several reasons, not least in remembrance and in your honour.
