PLANS for the new £16.1million Accrington Academy look set to be approved - but only if developers improve its green credentials.

Although the superschool in Queens Road West has included a wildlife pond in its design, Hyndburn Council planning committee has said it must produce 10 per cent of its own renewable energy because of the size of the building.

Planning officers have recommended the proposed extensions and improvements to existing buildings at the former Accrington Moorhead Sports College be approved but have stipulated ‘some on-site energy’ must be produced on the site.

This could mean a wind turbine, solar panels or other renewable energy could be incorporated onto the 1,150 pupil academy.

The report said that all non-residential developments over 1,000 square metres should get 10 per cent of its energy from “decentralised and renewable or low-carbon sources” unless the developer could show it was “not feasible or viable”.

It adds: “To approve a major development without some on-site energy being produced would set an undesirable precedent for the assessment of other future schemes.”

Plans have been submitted to extend the current school building by 3,685 square metres. If approved by the planning committee on January 7, works could start in March.

New sports pitches and hard play areas built to Sport England guidelines are also being provided, together with major landscaping improvements.

The new sports facilities will also include a fitness suite, activity studio and improved changing rooms.

New training suites for media studies, health and social care as well as a new assembly hall, larger drama facilities and an improved dining space are also planned.
