THE family of a teenage girl who was critically injured in a moped accident abroad have raised almost half the cash needed to bring her home.
Charlotte Robinson, of Greenfield Street, Rawtenstall, fractured her skull and pelvis when she fell off the bike while on holiday in Malia, Crete.
Her insurance company refused to pay for her treatment or fly her home because it says she didn’t take due care as she rode without a helmet.
The 19-year-old is now recovering on a neurological ward after a stint in inten-sive care.
Her family have made sterling efforts to raise £20,000 needed to fly Char-lotte home. Almost £9,000 has now been raised after a series of events.
Kim, Charlotte’s older sister, said: “I would like to say thanks for everyone who has organised or partic-ipated in ongoing fund-raising events.
“We will keep Charlotte in Greece until she has had her operation.
“Our target is to raise £20,000 but we want to donate some money to the NHS too. We want to raise awareness because we want to stop people getting on mopeds and to make sure peope have the right insurance.
Madison’s Wine Bar in Rawtenstall, where Charlotte works part-time, held an auction and raffle on Sunday which raised a further £1,500.
Bar manager Becky Greenwood, who employed Charlotte 12 months ago, said: “It was a great day – all our staff’s wages went into the fund and all the cash from food sold on the day.
“We’ve got lots more fundraising events planned to help get Charlotte home as soon as possible.”
The next fundraising event for Charlotte is a fun day and BBQ at Gorse Hill Primary School from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday.
This will be followed by a school disco at Mambo’s, Flixton Road in Urmston, from 7.30pm on Friday, August 29.
