FUNDRAISING Darwen schoolgirl Caitlin Jones has been shortlisted for a top courage award after raising thousands of pounds in memory of her father.
Caitlin, 12, of Somerset Avenue, raised more than £3,500 for cancer charities including the East Lancashire Hospice, Cancer Research UK and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
After the death of her father Nigel, 46, from lung cancer in February, she said she was determined that “no other child should have to go through what I have gone through.”
She has been shortlisted in the courage category of the Operation Summer Nights 'Celebration of Young People Awards' to be held on September 2. She was nominated by a number of people, including Sharon Crymble, from Burnley.
Sharon has been involved in promoting her charity events such as a variety night at Darwen Library Theatre last month.
Sharon said: “She has shown a lot of determination at a time that has been very challenging and has helped a lot of people by raising money for charity.
“She has always got a smile and has thrived on helping others.
“Her mum must be very proud of her because she has shone through everything brilliantly.” The awards, in their second year, are organised by Lancashire Constabulary and will be held at Preston North End’s Deepdale stadium.
They aim to recognise the commitment, energy and enthusiasm of young people up to the age of 18 across the county.
Each nominee will have to convince judges they deserve recognition for their efforts and will need to demonstrate a real commitment and energy to their cause.
The six categories for which young people can enter or be nominated are courage, exceptional commitment and dedication to a cause, back on track, improving the community, building bridges and outstanding achievement.
The courage award Caitlin is shortlisted for is for a young person who has shown remarkable strength of character by overcoming personal challenges to achieve success.
Caitlin’s mum, Tracy, 45, said: “We were both over the moon when we received confirmation that Caitlin had been shortlisted.
“She is so excited and looking forward to getting a dress for the occasion.
“Her dad would have been gobsmacked and she sees her nomination as a further tribute to him.”
