A PENSIONER was in a serious but stable condition last night after being airlifted to hospital follow-ing a car crash.

The 78-year-old man had been driving along Pimlico Road, Clitheroe, at around 12.35pm on Saturday when his Nissan Micra was in collision with a Land Rover Discovery.

The Nissan then crashed into the lights on the level crossing, close to Castle Cement.

The pensioner, who lives in the Clitheroe area, was cut free from the wreckage by the fire brigade before the North West Air Ambulance flew him to Royal Blackburn Hospital.

His wife, who had also been in the car, was taken to hospital for a check-up.

The man's condition was last night described as serious but stable and he had not regained consciousness. It is thought his injuries may include several broken ribs.

Sgt Pete Sculpher, from the road policing unit, said: “There were two people in each of the vehicles involved.

“We believe the Nissan Micra had been turning right from Pimlico Road into Pimlico Link Road and the Land Rover was travelling along Pimlico Link Road when the collision occurred.

“I would appeal for anyone who saw the incident to contact us.

"I have already spoken to a number of people who have been most helpful but anyone with information should get in touch.”

Pimlico Road was closed for more than three hours, reopening shortly before 5pm.

Anyone with information should contact the road policing unit on 01254 51212.
