Alastair wins place in orchestra again

A 13-YEAR-OLD boy from Greenmount has won a place in the National Children's Orchestra of Great Britain for the fourth year running.

Alastair McMath, who has been playing double bass for seven years, has been accepted for a place in the main orchestra. Every year, more than 800 children, aged seven to 14, audition to become a member of one of the five-age banded orchestras. Having been selected again, Alastair said: "I've made some great friends since I joined the orchestra. We get together three times a week for the courses and play some really good music. We have time to play football and do other things as well."

The National Children's Orchestra (NCO) is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year and is hoping to raise £500,000 to ensure the charity thrives for the children of the future.

One of the fundraising events is a Children's Concert of past and present NCO members to take place at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester on Friday May 23, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 (£3 for children) in advance or £5.50 (£3.50 for children) on the door.

For more information or to enquire about tickets: call 01204 885566.
