A POLITICIAN who has defected to the Conservative Party is a member of an anti-David Cameron website.

And blogs bearing Sajjad Karim's name on his website also criticised the Tory party leader, with one labelling Cameron a "chameleon".

Mr Karim, a member of the European parliament for the north west, said that an aide, who had since been sacked, was responsible.

And he said that neither the blog nor the membership of the anti-David Cameron website reflected his views.

However critics have slammed Mr Karim, who is based in Nelson.

He defected to the Conservatives from the Lib Dems on Monday.

Mr Karim said Mr Cameron's recent comments about immigration had persuaded him to join the Tory party from the Liberal Democrats.

But comments posted on his "blog" website just months ago, and attributed to him, criticised Mr Cameron.

An entry from June reads: "Whilst Cameron attempts to paint a glossy image of a gay-friendly party in the UK, he is also desperately trying to get into bed, at European level, with Poland's openly homophobic 'Law and Justice' party.

"I just hope the British public see Chameleon Cameron for who he really is!!!"

The section still featured on his website today.

And on his page on social networking site Facebook, Mr Karim was today still a member of a group called 'Am I The Only Person Who Doesn't Like David Cameron?'.

Speaking today, Mr Karim said the blog entries and website were a result of a former employee who had acted on his behalf without his permission.

He said the aide has now been sacked and he was attempting to take the websites off-line.

Mr Karim said: "That particular blog does not reflect my views and I was assured it would be removed.

"It is a very unfortunate situation and I accept that it does look very much as if I have said those things.

"Like most politicians I am reliant on the team around me and I have been let down on this occasion."

But Pendle MP, Gordon Prentice, said Mr Karim had let down people who had loyally supported him for years.

He said: "This kind of behaviour contaminates our politics.

"For the past year he has been denouncing Cameron, calling him a chameleon and someone who has no policies."

Pendle peer and Lib Dem councillor Tony Greaves said many people in the area were feeling 'sick and betrayed' following Mr Karim's defection.

Lord Greaves added: "His behaviour has been despicable."
