A White Ribbon campaign is being launched in Bury this month to spearhead fundraising and raise awareness for victims of domestic violence.

A series of local events, including wrapping Bury's Tower Clock in a white ribbon for the duration of the campaign, will be staged.

November 25 will mark the start of the initiative to co-incide with the International UN day to eliminate violence against women. More than 800 organisations in 90 countries will take part in the 16-day International White Ribbon Campaign.

Last year in Bury, hundreds of people wore the white ribbon as a symbol of their own personal pledge.

Bury's formal launch will be held on November 26 when, with the help of a celebrity guest, 150 white balloons will be let loose from Bury Town Hall to signify the number of women killed by their partner or ex-partner per year.

The Domestic Violence Forum has organised events over a two-week period to make sure that Bury plays its part again.

Councillor Michelle Wiseman, local authority executive member for safe, strong and confident communities, said: "Domestic violence is an extremely serious issue and Bury intends to do its bit to raise money for charity."
