BURY teenage singing sensation Soraya Mafi will be in seventh heaven today if she wins an audition to perform and record with platinum selling classical girl group All Angels.

Soprano Soraya (19), is one of five females who will be going for glory during a nail-biting final audition to be held at a London studio. And if she triumphs in the sing-off, she will appear in concert with the group and then go into a studio to record with the girls.

Universal Classics & Jazz are running the Search for a 5th Angel contest with Classic FM. This is the first nationwide talent competition to focus only on classical music. All Angels had huge success with their debut album lat year. Now, the group want to help a budding singer to achieve the success they've found.

Despite her tender years, Soraya is something of a veteran when it comes to performing. The former Bury Grammar School girl, who earlier attended St Joseph's primary school in Ramsbottom, sang in front of two huge audiences earlier this year.

In March, she performed to thousands of soccer fans at Old Trafford during a football match to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. And three months later, Soraya became the first singer to perform at the new Wembley Stadium where she sang the English and Brazilian national anthems at a friendly international.

Now in her second year at Manchester's Royal Northern College of Music, she said "When I heard about the All Angels competition, I submitted a CD with two songs I'd recorded previously when I'd won a separate competition. Later, I was rung up to say I was one of the five finalists."

Commenting on today's all-important audition, Soraya continued: "I will be singing two songs in front of the judges. The fact that I sang at the two stadiums earlier this year is very important as I've got the experience." The winner will be announced on Monday.

If the teenager is successful, she will appear with All Angels at a concert in London on November 28. Soraya will then accompany the group members when they go into the studio to record a version of Ave Verum Corpus.

Soraya went on: "If I do win, then a lot of people will get to hear me sing and it will give me the chance to perform with a group. This will give me another string to my bow. Although I've performed solo in the past, I can't be snobby and say I just want to sing on my own. This career is such a hard business and I've got to look at all the options.

"At the end of the day, it's not just all about singing but having a career and getting work which is hard in terms of opera. As far as performing and recording with All Angels is concerned, you can't buy things like that. I'm just trying to be calm about it."

Soraya, the daughter of an English mother and Iranian father, was born at Fairfield Hospital. After leaving school she did her A-levels at Holy Cross College. One of her first accolades came three years ago when she won the National English Song Prize at the Royal Academy of Music.

Apart from singing, the 19-year-old is also a talented actress and in 2005 won an award from the Greater Manchester Drama Federation for Best Supporting Actor.

A member of the Halle Youth and National Youth Choirs, Soraya won a scholarship to the Royal Northern College of Music two years ago.
