A WOMAN arrested by police at a house in Radcliffe has denied helping to fund terrorism training.

Mehreen Haji is standing trial at Manchester Crown Court accused of two offences of arranging funding for the purposes of terrorism.

Also in the dock is her husband, taxi driver Habib Ahmed, who faces charges of possessing information for terrorist purposes and electronic records connected with terrorism, and with attending a terrorist training camp.

A second man, Raingzieb Ahmed aged 33, from Fallowfield, is accused of directing terrorism and possession of a rucksack containing traces of explosives. Both men are charged with membership of Al Qaida and possession of books on terrorism.

The three defendants deny all charges.

Haji aged 27, was detained in September 2006 following a police raid on a house in Bury Road.

The trial, which started last week, heard Ahmed and Haji were married by the radical cleric Sheuikh Omar Bakri Mohammed When police searched Habib Ahmed’s home in Cheetham Hill, they found a computer which had been used to search for imformation about bomb-making chemicals. There had also been Google searches for the home addresses of the then defence secretary Geoff Hoon and for Salman Rushdie.

Other searches were made to download A Study of Assassination and Guerilla Warfare, it was claimed.

The jury saw photographs of what the prosecution described as “terrorist contacts books” containing the phone numbers of high ranking Al-Qaida members and e-mail addresses to be used by the team. Among them was a man thought to have been connnected with the Madrid bombings.

The court heard Habib Ahmed was away from his home in Cheetham Hill for extended periods and was in contact with his wife.

Phone calls and text messages suggested she wanted him to get rid of the contacts books and was sick of lying about his whereabouts.

Rangzieb Ahmed was said to be part of an “active service cell” and was being helped by Habib Ahmed who had attended terrorist training camps in Pakistan.

The trial, set to last three months, continues.
