Don't throw it away - recycle it!

UNWANTED items could undergo a new lease of life rather than being confined to landfill.

That's the objective of a Bury-based group which is anxious that recycling be an alternative to discarding items to the detriment of the environment.

The popularity of the Bury-freecycle group is illustrated by the fact it already has more than 150 members. That's a tribute to the foresight and dedication of Angie Gallagher who launched the local organisation.

When she became aware that other such freecycle sites were catering for people in Bolton, Rossendale, Rochdale and Manchester, Angie decided that a similar one was required for Bury.

She explained: "The Bury-freecycle group is open to all who want to recycle' items they no longer need, rather than throwing them away. Whether it's a chair, fax machine, piano or an old door, people can offer it on our group. Maybe they are interested in acquiring something themselves. Non-profit groups are also welcome to participate."

Angie added: "People who wanted to offer things had to put them on the other sites, which is why I decided to see if I could make one just for Bury. So far, we have 153 members but this is due to the local sites telling their members that we are here.

"I want the whole of Bury to know that it's here and then, hopefully, lots of people will benefit from it. Our main rule is that everything posted must be free. The group is part of the Freecycle Network, a non-profit organisation and a movement of people interested in keeping good stuff out of landfills."
