A TEAM of children beat teams of adults in a sponsored wagon-pull in memory of a teenager who died in a motorway accident.

Organisers of the pull, at the Red Rose Hotel, Rosegrove, Burnley, hope to raise £1,000 for the Harrison Hartley memorial fund.

The 14-year-old, of Harling Street, Rosegrove, died two days after being struck by a car on the M65 on March 1.

Three teams - the Red House, Junction Hotel and ten bouncers from Burnley - took part in the event to pull a 7.5 tonne lorry over 750 yards in the fastest time.

The winning time of 5min 48sec was achieved by a team with six adults and six children, all of whom knew the teenager.

Event organiser Amanda Horrocks, whose children were part of the winning team, said: "The kids just came to watch and ended up joining in as there were not enough people. We did it because we want to raise funds for the memorial.

"It's just the whole community getting together to show some sympathy. This is the nearest pub to the family and we wanted to show some support." The money was raised through sponsorship and buckets collecting cash from the people who lined the street outside.

Amanda's father and pub owner Alan Horrocks said: "One of the teams was a gang of children all under 14 and they won.

"They pulled their hearts out because they all knew Harrison."

Three more fundraising events are planned.

A quiz night and pool knockout competition will take place this week and an auction goes ahead on April 12 in the Railway Club.

"The money raised will be used to provide two benches and trees in memory of the teenager.
