Man dies in motorway crash

A MAN has died after a collision on the M66 motorway in Bury.

His Musso 4x4 car went off the road and hit a tree near junction two at Heap Bridge shortly before 4.45pm today.

The man, believed to have been 80 years old,  was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been formally identified.

Police are carrying out an investigation at the scene and the northbound carriageway is expected to be shut between junctions one and two until 11pm.

Vehicles are being diverted from junction two to follow Rochdale Road and Walmersley Road and rejoin the M66 at Ramsbottom.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the serious collision investigation unit on 0161 856 4740.
