Accrington homeless man fined over threat

A 37-year-old man who was already banned from an Accrington charity that helps the homeless and destitute, turned up and began threatening staff, including an 80-year-old woman volunteer.

Blackburn magistrates heard John Lomax arrived at Maundy Grange carrying all his worldly goods in two bags.

He then demanded help from the volunteers.

And he told staff they were ‘a waste of time’ when they turned him away.

Lomax, 37, of Elizabeth Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour.

He was fined £70 with £100 costs.

Graeme Parkinson, defending, said Lomax had gone about trying to get help in completely the wrong way.

“Dorothy McGregor, who runs Maundy Grange, has a tremendous reputation and my client accepts she has done an awful lot of good work in Accrington,” said Mr Parkinson.

“My client is down on his luck at the moment but he shouldn’t have spoken to people in the way that he did.”

Where will he get the money to pay the fine? Are Magistrates incapable of using common sense? This man needs proper professional help. Is he going to slip through the net? Perhaps a spell in prison will get him the help he needs.

A day will come when the middle classes are begging for food handouts just to feed their children .Fears about rising food prices and global food shortages are mounting crop losses in Midwest America which will result in food shortages worldwide, as the U.S. is a leading exporter of grain, they will cut back on how much food aid the superpower can offer to international regions in need.

The rough growing summer will also hit grocery stores, with the rising cost of corn expected to drive up meat prices in particular. Corn products—like ethanol, corn syrup, and corn meal—may also see a spike going into 2013, CNN reportrd. The increase will likely be slight, but will hit low income familiess hardest and charities like Maundy Grange in Accrington and many more through out East Lancashire will struggle to feed people who are kind and courteous never mind rude and violent .

A devastating global food crisis unlike anything we have ever seen in modern times is coming. Crippling drought and bizarre weather patterns have damaged food production all over the world this summer, and the UN and the World Bank have both issued ominous warnings about the food inflation that is coming.

To those of us in the Western world, a rise in the price of food can be a major inconvenience, but in the developing world it can mean the difference between life and death. Just remember what happened back in 2008. When food prices hit record highs it led to food riots in 28 different countries. Today, there are approximately 2 billion people that are malnourished around the globe. Even rumors of food shortages are enough to spark mass chaos in many areas of the planet. When people fear that they are not going to be able to feed their families they tend to get very desperate. That is why a recent CNN article declared that "2013 will be a year of serious global crisis"The truth is that we are not just facing rumors of a global food crisis - one is actually starting to unfold right in front of our eyes. The United States experienced the worst drought in more than 50 years this summer, and some experts are already declaring that the weather has been so dry for so long that tremendous damage has already been done to next year's crops. On the other side of the world, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan have all seen their wheat crops devastated by the horrible drought this summer. Australia has also been dealing with drought, and in India monsoon rains were about 15 percent behind pace in mid-August.

Global food production is going to be much less than expected this year, and global food demand continues to steadily rise. What that means is that food inflation, food shortages and food riots are coming, and it isn't going to be pretty. For these reasons, a food storage 2012 and stockpiling plan is prudent, and a good way to plan for the future. I think it's better to be prepared ahead of a crisis, instead or right before. And once a crisis has happened, it's too late.

As gas prices are skyrocketing, food prices will go up as well. That is another good reason to store food. It is a good idea to stock up when sales are on.

The purpose of me telling you this is not to scare anyone, It's not about living in a state of fear, but a state of awareness, and taking action so you are prepared,

There are mountains of food. All it takes is for the rich to distribute them. OK, no chance of that then.

Corn and grain shortages are due to the poor condition of soil now that it's been artificially fertilized for so many years. Most grains in the USA are genetically modified and a shortage of these will be a good thing if the soil is allowed to regenerate and get its nutrition back. OK, no chance of that then.

There shouldn't be homeless people in the UK. With a little perseverance and courtesy and form filling, everyone can have a home, food, clothing etc. UK is a rich country. OK, I know circumstances can make it tremendously difficult, and I should be very thankful I am not in that situation, and I agree with that. But honestly when you speak to homeless people, you realise it is their attitude to other people that is their main problem. That's the case with Mr Lomax. I hope someone will talk some sense into him.

Dorothy Mcgregor of maundy grange is an absolute saint, but i fear she is going to become inundated by people needing help. They are coming to town from far and wide as i understand being released from liverpool prison and coming to Accrington for Dorothys hospitality. Sadly she will become a victim of her own success.

The druggies the alcoholics and the homeless bring towns down that is why I always refuse to give money food clothes etc to them and charities like Maundy Grange who support them. The poor manners and sometimes abusive and aggressive behaviours they mere to others of these people in hard times often makes it difficult to understanding compassionate and empathetic towards them and makes people turn away and walk on. Also you will often see these people spend whatever you give directly them on their bad habits like drugs/drinks etc instantly instead of helping themselves properly and some will trade their food for drink drugs etc refusing to help themselves.

Aggression and threats are not the way to get anything in life;put simply, there are ways to get things in life and this isn't it. If that guy did that to me then regardless of his situation he would get nothing at all. Maundy Grange should ban homeless/alcoholics/
drug addicts like him as they have done here if they threaten verbally or threaten/use violence towards the volunteers of the organisation. The aggression and violence is one of the reasons why alcoholics/drug addicts are refused help from the public and organisations and the sooner the dogooders stick up for these people realise that the BETTER.
