East Lancashire’s leading cinema figures premier the London Film Festival

TWO OF East Lancashire’s leading cinema figures have directed and starred in a film which took five years to produce, in a bid to portray the ageing process in real time.
‘Everyday,’ which premiered last night at the London Film Festival, was directed by Blackburn-born Michael Winterbottom and stars Life On Mars actor John Simm, who comes from Nelson.
The film charts a family’s struggle through a jail sentence and was shot over a few weeks each year to accurately show the passing of the years in the ‘bleak love story’.
Simm plays the prisoner, Ian, jailed for drug smuggling, as he endures the tedium of prison life, moving month by month towards day release and the end of his sentence.
The unique half-a-decade process allows the authentic ageing of his children to be put starkly in focus.
The children were also filmed in their actual homes and schools in order to add to the realism.
Everyday is scheduled to be shown as early as next month on Channel 4.
Speaking yesterday on the BBC’s Today programme, Winterbottom explained his intentions.
He said: “It's a love story really, it's about can love survive a long period of separation.
“This is not a film about prison in its detail, but about the essence of prison, in taking you way from your normal life."
