A DOG which ran across the M65 motorway caused a four car collision.

The animal ran across the carriageway just after Junction 12 at Nelson, travelling westbound, at around 8.50am.

Drivers slammed on their brakes to avoid the dog, causing four cars to collide.

No injuries were reported and the road is now clear.

Police are awaiting the recovery of the Vauxhall Zafira, Honda Accord, Audi A6, and another vehicle, which were damaged during the crash and moved to the hard shoulder.

Sgt David Hogarth said: “It is quite rare for an animal to cause a motorway pile-up but it’s a good to see people wearing their seatbelts. It has prevented any serious injuries.”

The dogs owner should be made to pay for any repairs

Excuse me '4Commonsense' that was my family pet and this ACCIDENT didn't effect any humans and only caused a few scratches and bumps where as I've lost my dog. Cars and vehicles can be replaced. Family pets can't.

More careless pet lovers causing mayhem because they choose to let them run wild.
I do hope the owner doesn't have children.

Well actually pets can be replaced same as cars but cars are far more expensive Your dog will have now caused 4 people to no doubt claim off their insurance pushing everybodys insurance up even more. Do you regularly let your dog run free or had it escaped?

Pets cannot be replaced at all!!!
Its like when a person dies.... can they be replaced???

Accidents happen..... cars are material things and scratches and scrapes can be fixed.....

I doubt this will make insurance prices rise........ unless someone decides to claim whiplash!!!

I know this family and they are NOT irresponsible dog owners at all ! They are a caring family and are devastated by the loss of their pet and the accident on the motorway and the upset it caused to the drivers. They didn't allow their dog to run wild and were walking her, as they have hundreds of times, in the same place this morning when she ran off. This was uncharateristic for her and she has never done this before.
Get your facts right before you start slating the dog owners folks !

Its a only dog for god sake this could have been loss of human life. I am surprised that the animals owner has commented on here, when it was their lack of commonsense for not having it on a lead in the first place. "Idiot dog owner"

It was my sister that was involved in this and if your husband or partner wasn't on his mobile and was actually watching your dogs then this might not of happened. My sister is devastated that your dog was killed but she could of been killed too, it wasn't just a few bumps and scratches her car is a total right off and your partner could'nt of cared less he made an excuse that it wasn't even his dog!!! So you get your facts right first!!

The dog should have been on a leash - no excuses whatsoever!

We are very fortunate not to be talking about a motorway pile up with multiple HUMAN causalities.

I think you should mind your own business. This could have been anyone's dog. Do you not think the family are upset enough. Piping up your opinions on here! People like you, hiding behind your keyboard upsetting people needto get a life and stop interfering in others. Noone was seriously injured or hurt, big deal a bit of metal was crushed no doubt the individuals will claim for whip lash etc and get financial reconsiliation! Crawl back in your hole!

I've driven 3 times this week on this stretch of motorway (though technically it passes as a dual carriageway due to being two lanes). My conclusion is on each journey was that other vehicles were much too close together to stop if needed. Idiots and braking distance all seem to sheeple each other. I've noticed also MANY drivers doing a sheeple thung by 'indicating' when coming straight off a roundabout.
.
If, as I saw, the idiots were tailgating each other as close as a cucumber butty, then they deserve all they get!.
.
There was no motorway 'pile-up', as suggested by Sgt David Hogarth and to be honest I was more concerned for the dog after seeing the kn}bheads drive so close together. a concertina awaiting to be pressed!
