Accrington woman poured boiling water on elderly man

A WOMAN has been jailed for five years after pouring boiling water onto an elderly man and hitting him round the head with a kettle.

Davina Lily Norris became angry when her 61-year-old friend, Michael Brown refused to give her money for drugs, Burnley Crown Court heard.

When he refused she went into the kitchen to boil the kettle and returned to the lounge where she poured boiling water over his shoulders and torso, prosecutors said.

The court heard Norris then followed the victim out of the house as he ran into the street crying for help.

While they were both on the road Norris hit him with the spout of the kettle causing a serious head injury, police said.

After the attack he went home and contacted the police as Norris fled in the opposite direction leaving the kettle behind on the roadside.

The ‘unprovoked attack’ which left Mr Brown with 14 separate first degree burns, a serious head injury and permanent scarring took place at his home in Devon Place, Church.

Norris also threatened to kill him if he got blood on her white jeans, during the November 2011 attack, the court heard.

The drug addict, of Frederick Street, Accrington, pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Drugs are the scourge of the world. I am sure there is a bit more to this than meets the eye. 5 years for such a serious attack sounds lenient when you consider the immediate discount of the sentence. Another consideration is, how much more addicted to drugs she will be when released? Drugs in prison seems to common to help addicts kick the habit.

Wounding with intent to cause GBH carries a maximum life sentence. Why is she not anywhere near that tariff ?

Drugs and greed.

The trouble is that we aren't helping matters by simply referring to this problem as "drugs". This wasn't "drugs". It was heroin. Heroin is the scourge of society. Heroin addicts are the ones who do despicable things like this.

The sooner we highlight that this is a particular drug - heroin - not some airy fairy generalisation of "drugs", then the sooner we can find a solution. Heroin doesn't deserve to be softened by associating it with other softer "drugs". Heroin makes it's addicts do despicable things like this. Despicable things like this should be rightfully identified as heroin.

We need to prescribe heroin to it's addicts. Only then will you not read heart wrenching stories like this. Lumping all "drugs" together, and carrying on with the same failed policies, mean we will have to get used to being angry with stories like this as heroin addicts do more despicable things to get their fix.

The drug problem in prison isn't helped by treating all drugs the same either incidentally. The fact that hard drugs like heroin stay in your system far less than a soft drug like cannabis, means that criminals take heroin in prison. Heroin addicts generally don't stay on the straight and narrow when they get out.
