DARWEN is set to be brightened up with new golden replicas of its iconic tower after the town council agreed to have a new mould made.

The golden towers already line the tops of railings in the town centre and outside Darwen Academy.

But the mould used to make the miniature landmarks was accidentally thrown away after a storage room was cleared out.

Town councillor Simon Huggill had investigated having a new mould produced for £1,200 and his proposal was given the green light by the council’s finance committee.

Coun Huggill said that once the mould was made and new models cast, they could be used to adorn more railings in the town and even sold as souvenirs.

He said: “First of all we want to look at making the hand rails outside the Post Office black with the little towers on the top, like in Market Street.

“They could also be used as waymarkers for heritage trails or to mark the routes up to the tower.

“We could even sell them to people who want to put them in their gardens, or use them for trophies and other things like that.”

Coun Huggill said he wanted to expand the areas where the towers were used as it was part of what made the town unique. He said: “When the Darwen Academy scheme was being done I wanted something in keeping with the conservation area and I think they look really well.

“I enjoy driving through the town and seeing the towers as they are very nice to look at.

“It is another thing that makes Darwen unique. It has the same effect as the lions in London.”

Coun Huggill said the mould and towers would be produced using firms in Helmshore and Accrington.

have the council not got a grasp on where and where not to spend money ?Think the money could be spent more wisely on other council services eg ensuring street cleaning is carried out in all .The street i live in has not been swept for 18 months !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(former Councillor) well done darwen Town Council for finally agreeing to this. The Towers are yet another symbol of what makes Darwen unique and to those who scoff at the idea just think - these towers will still be around long after most of us have gone (unless the Borough council decide to revamp the town and remove them as before). Now get on and decide a running track at the top of Pole lane as part of the Olympic legacy!

Major Tom - you should be demoted to the rank of Private unless you are refering to Darwin in Australia. For us PROUD Lancashire people and PROUD Darweners (but not some of its residents unfortunately - it has attracted some yobs) we live in DARWEN LANCASHIRE. Before the usual snide comments are made about the town, have you visited Darwen and the three wonderful parks for instance?

lets hope the person who threw the old mould away does not throw our money away again, Councillor Mullins what happy pills is he taking, does he think the people of Darwen are happy he is spending our Council Tax in that way!!!!!!!......
