Driver cut free from car

FIREFIGHTERS freed a man from the wreckage of a car after a crash in which a woman was also injured.

The 39-year-old was driving a Toyota Aygo car in Blackburn Road when it collided with a Ford Fiesta at the junction with Crompton Way in Astley Bridge at 9.30pm on Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the scene and removed two doors from the Aygo in order to free the man.

Paramedics treated him at the scene and they also treated a 52-year-old woman who had been driving the Fiesta.

The man and the woman were taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital and were treated for chest and back injuries.

They have since been discharged.

Police closed the junction for about 25 minutes while they cleared the written-off Aygo and the damaged Fiesta from the road, but motorists were able to use diversions.
