A woman who threw a cigarette butt out of a car window while stopped at traffic lights in Chorley has been landed with a £150 bill.
Emma Grady, 25, of Shakespeare Terrace, Chorley, was found guilty at South Ribble Magistrates’ Court after failing to pay a fixed penalty notice in a prosecution brought by Chorley Council.
The court heard that Grady was stopped at traffic lights in the town centre when a police community support officer on patrol saw Grady take a cigarette butt from her mouth and throw it out of the window.
Magistrates were told that Grady was issued with a fixed penalty notice and was sent two reminders by the council to which there had been no reply.
Councillor Terry Brown, who oversees environmental crime at Chorley Council, said: “A lot of effort goes into keeping the streets clean and it’s disappointing to see that someone thinks it is fine to flick a cigarette butt out of a car window.”
He added: “If you do smoke in your car please use an ashtray and dispose of the rubbish properly.”
Magistrates handed Grady a £35 fine and ordered her to pay £100 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
