Chorley people urged to check council tax records are up to date

People living in Chorley are being urged to make sure their electoral records are up-to-date as a data matching exercise to prevent and detect fraud is about to take place.

The council is currently in the process of providing council tax records and the full electoral register to the Audit Commission which conducts the National Fraud Initiative.

Once the information has been checked, they will be informed of any ‘matches’ that need investigating, for example where someone is claiming single person discount but where the electoral register states that they are not living alone, or pension payments being checked against records of people who have died.

The results for data matches received in the 2011/12 council tax single person discount exercise are currently being investigated.
