Blackburn homeowners fail on safety protection

HOMEOWNERS in Blackburn are failing to protect their properties from burglars.

A survey has shown that 42 per cent of respondents admitted they had not made home security improvements during the past five years.

The majority of homeowners, 52 per cent, remain without even a basic alarm installed at their home.

And, of the homeowners who did have an alarm, 24 per cent never use the system – either through choice or because the alarm does not work.

Forty per cent said they would take a cursory glance out of the window if a neighbour’s alarm sounded, while 13 per cent would assume it was a false alarm.

Nick Ross, UK Home Security Week ambassador, crime author and expert, and former Crimewatch presenter, said: “The really discouraging thing for police from this survey will be how little respondents seem to know about the practicalities of household burglary.

“The reality is that, when it comes to burglary, we can do – and as a nation have done – a huge amount to make ourselves less vulnerable.”

That's because some of them expect BwD council to provide CCTV at tax-payers expense to protect their properties.

I've got an idea, why doesn't everyone just stop buying stolen goods?
If it "fell off the back of a lorry" then don't buy it. Don't blame the victims of burglary, blame the people that burgle and those that buy the goods.

If there was no money to be made from robbing stuff then it wouldn't be worth it/

Did I read this article correctly or do I need new spectacles? It's all MY fault that there are so many burglaries?
I am sure that I already pay for..
a Police patrol in my area,
a Legal Aid scheme,
a Courts system,
a Prison system,
a Probation service
and now you want me to pay for an alarm and CCTV system, as well. If any or all of the former were doing their job(s) properly, I wouldn't have the need, would I?
Not to mention the fact that the Law has now made it illegal to beat the living daylights out of any of the 'precious little darlings' that do invade my home...
(You know the one I mean, that which I worked overtime for, scrimped and saved for, even going without holidays , just to pay my way.)
Or, even owning a dog that is trained to bite off their bits for breeding.
(You know that one, where you said that it was 'not nice' to have a photo-shop picture of my slobbering dog that had a mouthful of male genitalia beneath the words, 'I live here!', in my porch window.)
If there are failures going on around here, it's certainly not coming from my end of the stick, that you won't let me beat them with, instead I'm left with the brown, smelly end, as you suck in more of my hard earned money, while pandering to the poor unfortunate perpetrators of crime.

Why not allow me to protect my home in a way that I see fit and, at the same time, do my bit for society as a whole? I'd wire up the house in my way, go off to work, safe in the knowledge that, if anyone were stupid enough to catch sight of my goods and then burgle my home, they would no longer be going down the over expensive way of the utterly failed penal system. Instead they would be off to casualty, minus an hand or foot thus saving me a small fortune.

Instead of insisting that home-owners spend their money, why not insist that all second-hand shops along with scrapyards were both licensed and made use of the Lantern system. You know the thing I mean, that bit of kit that scans a fingerprint and compares it to the database of known criminals?
However, if you are finding that a bit of costly exercise to roll out nationally, why not insist that there is a 24 hour waiting period before pay out, where the provenance of scrap or serial numbers on goods, were checked with the Police?
This would mean that those responsible for investigating burglaries ensured that they were 'on-scene' within a few hours and not, as is the case now, sometime this week.
And another thing, any person found guilty of crime that is used to feed an habit of some kind, should be sent to Prison, without delay. Where they are to be kept in cellular confinement for a period of 6 weeks, to allow whatever problem they have to be addressed. Any visitors they have may have, can view them through a glass screen thus preventing the transfer of illegal drugs.
The fact that a shoplifter in this town may be arrested in a morning, released by lunchtime, only to be caught again later that same day, committing the self-same crime is, to my mind, only indicative of YOUR inability to serve the public good. As they say, people in glass houses, should not throw stones.

Yes system fails all honest tax payers, we read that the person has 56 convictions. Prisoners should be made to work contribute for their keep. Not we want it all that they get at huge costs to public. The PC brigade got it all wrong, perhaps they have never had personal intrusion damage done to them.
