A BURNLEY man was knocked unconsicous in an unprovoked street attack, police have confirmed.
An appeal for witnesses has been launched after the 51-year-old was set upon without warning, in Yorkshire Street.
And police are anxious to trace eyewitnesses who assisted response officers in the immediate aftermath of the incident.
The victim was punched to the face and fell to the floor, briefly losing consciousness, and was later taken to the Royal Blackburn Hospital for treatment to cuts and bruises.
Police called to the scene were alerted to a possible suspect but he managed to flee from the area.
And by the time officers had returned to where the original attack took place, the eyewitnesses had left.
PC David Kingsnorth, of Burnley police, said, “I would appeal to those people who were at the scene to come forward and contact us.
“We believe they may have vital information that will enable us to track down the attacker.
“The victim was treated at the Royal Blackburn Hospital for his injuries and is now recovering.”
The attack took place on August 18 at around 7.40pm, but police have only just released details of the incident.
PC Kingsnorth can be contacted by calling the constabulary on 101 or information can be left with Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.

Nothing like appealing to the public whilst it's still fresh in the memory. Did all officers need to go after the suspect? Could one not have stayed with the man and the eye-witnesses?
