Club is renamed in memory of Geoff
Walshaw Sports Club has renamed its ground in a poignant tribute to its former president.
The popular Sycamore Road venue in Tottington is now the Geoff Ormerod Sports Ground, a lasting memorial to the man who had a long association with the club stretching back to the 1970s.
And it was his two daughters, Susan McLaughlin and Pamela Madrell, who were invited to unveil the name sign at the entrance to the club.
Mr Ormerod, who lived in Tottington, died in May at the age of 87.
It was the decision of the club’s committee to rename the ground in his honour.
Chairman Steve Hunt said: “The committee wanted to recognise Geoff and the good he did for the club, mainly in relation to his involvement in the ground and field.
“He always ensured the field was in perfect condition for sporting members.
“Walshaw Sports Club opened in 1968 and Geoff joined in the early ’70s and became chairman of the cricket section in the late 1970s and president in the late ‘80s. He was always keen to have the best possible facilities for our members.”
With more than 400 members, the club is a well-used sporting and social venue. It has junior and senior cricket and football teams and a ladies rounders team as well as providing coaching in cricket and soccer for youngsters aged three upwards. Mr Ormerod had also been associated with the village’s bowling club.
