£1,200 on offer for Blackburn students

EXCEPTIONAL students are being offered £1,200 scholarships at Blackburn College.
The Sixth Form at Blackburn College will automatically award an academic scholarship to enrolling students who have achieved five or more As or A*s at GCSE.
Alongside the scholarship fund, the students will also become members of the college’s ‘high-achievers’ programme, which opens up a range of opportunities, aimed at developing them as people and preparing for applications to most prestigious universities.
This initiative follows a successful programme set up by the college last year where four types of scholarships — academic, sport, arts and ambassador – were handed to students aged 16 to 19 who had demonstrated exceptional capabilities in these areas.
Applications are still welcome for scholarships in sport and in the arts for enrolment in the 2012/13 academic year.
Wendy Simms, head of Sixth Form, said: “It’s no secret that the cost of education has rocketed over the last 20 years and more so following the Department of Education’s decision to stop paying education maintenance allowance (EMA) to students.
“We understand that some students will struggle and a scholarship could provide the extra financial help and support to take on their studies without the need for a part time job.
“They can also buy books and equipment to help them even further.”
All scholarships are worth £1,200 per year for up to two years.
They will be paid in three instalments based on student’s attendance, submission of work, achievement of target grades and continued evidence that students are further developing their skills in the specific areas.
