Gang sets fire to bins across arson ‘hot spot’

ARSONISTS have been on the rampage, setting fire to wheelie bins across Great Lever.

Four fires were started in less than two hours in the area previously named as Greater Manchester’s third worst “hot spot” for wheelie bin fires.

Police are investigating and suspect the fires were started by a serial arsonist.

Firefighters were called to the first bin blaze in Freshfield Avenue at 1.25am, to Division Street where a bin outside a house has been set alight at 1.20am, to Rishton Lane at 2am and Rupert Street at 2.48am, where a bin was set on fire in an alleyway.

Andy Hardman, watch manager at Bolton Central, said: “We think it was probably youths but we would like to ask homeowners to only put their bins out on the collection day and then bring them in straight away to stop this kind of thing happening.

“Don’t put bins near your property as there is the possibility that it could spread to buildings.”

Hameeda Begum, aged 71, and her granddaughter, Alana Mian, aged four, died after a burning wheelie bin was pushed against the family’s home in Little Holme Walk, in Great Lever, on June 23, 2008.

Following the fatal fire, firefighters and the council warned people of the dangers of not securing bins as soon as they are collected by posting fire safety messages on the side of bin wagons, posters in libraries, shops and council offices.

Figures from Greater Manchester Fire Service last year revealed there were 150 deliberate fires in Great Lever within a year, mainly involving wheelie bins, skips or mounds of rubbish.

There were 1,115 across Bolton, with other hotspots including Farnworth, with 115, and Halliwell and Crompton, with 91.

In the wake of the figures, Bolton Council , in partnership with the police and firefighters, launched a campaign to clamp down on wheelie bins being left out overnight.

Advisory letters were sent out to householders who failed to listen to the advice.

The council cannot refer to residents as those who "failed to listen" some of the properties in Great Lever do not have a secure place to leave bins, because the gated area's do not have locks on, so anyone can go in and steal a bin to set it on fire. The council should do something more like provide those residents with locks for there gates so they can safely store there bins!

Even if they catch them no action will be taken by the authorities as has happened in many other previous sprees. I guess someone will have to die before takes these crimes seriously and this can't be right.

if the Council purchased a large quantity of locks, they would all fit the same key - so everyone could get into everyone else's. Best to buy your own - and not depend on the Council for everything.

What happens in cases like my daughters? the bins were put out for collection on the 7th Aug. but were not emptied, the excuse given , was the lorry had broken down, the bins now full to capacity were left out again on 14th Aug.but were missed again, after another phone call to the council we were told that we could put our rubbish into bin bags, they would be able to collect up to 3 bags as well as the normal collection.
the bins were emptied during the 3rd week, but outside of the usual collection day....by the way, it wasn't just my daughters bin that was missed it was 1 of 4 on the same street.
So instead of pontificating, the council should put it's own house in order!!!!

If you are saying you do set fire to the wheelie bins I hope BN pass on your details to the police as you quoted ( i really hope i set fire to one of YOURS YOU MISERABLE OLD SH*TES!)

There is an ongoing murder case (as far as I know) perhaps the police should talk to you.

I wrote a comment on Mon. 20th Aug. about the bin collection,or in the case my daughter the lack of bin collections, that the bins, although they were put out on time, were not emptied for two weeks running.
After complaining to the council by phone the bin was emptied outside the usual collection day, the bin was again put out today 21st Aug. and guess what ! the binmen have not emptied the bin once again.
She does not live in some remote part of the planet, but on Johnson Fold, the binmen have a break opposite my daughters house, then, when they are done they move to another part of my daughters street to continue with their round but, again not emptying the bin.
this is now the 3rd time running, this property is one of four on a main street on the estate.
If a member of the council reads this please do the job you were elected to do.
phone calls to the appropriate office seem to have had no effect, let's hope this message gets through.
