Residents meet over Smithills plans

MORE than 80 residents attended a public meeting on Friday over controversial plans surrounding the future of Smithills Coaching house which is ceasing operations on August 27.
Jones Hopes has applied for listed building and planning approval to transform the grade II listed building into eight homes which the company says will prevent it from rotting or falling into disrepair. The plans, along with proposals to build an extra 21 houses on the surrounding land, will be considered at a special planning meeting of Bolton Council later this month.
But members of the public, Civic Trust and councillors have objected to the proposals.
Last night’s public meeting, held at Smithills Sports Centre, was chaired by ward councillor and leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, Cllr Roger Hayes. He told the audience: “The main issue is to find out what you think. I know a good number of people are very worried about this.”

I dont want to see it knocked down, because we are losing far too many of our important cultural buildings.
Just shut the bl00dy thing down as a restaurant.

The "It'll only fall into disrepair if we don't bulldoze it" attitude is the reason why the North West has lost so many great buildings. Smithills, in its current state, is a thing of beauty and has been for several hundred years, but suddenly some clown in Cheshire has decided to wipe away several centuries of history, for a handful of gelt; just to bring a little more importance to his/her life. Selfish.
