Security blitz for Blackburn registration plates

MOTORISTS in Blackburn have been offering special anti-theft number plate screws to try and reduce the number of thefts.

Neighbourhood police officers handed out more than 80 tamper-proof screw kits and spoke to 150 motorists in the Audley and Bastwell areas of the town last Wednesday.

The drive comes after a spate of number plates were stolen and then used on other vehicles to commit other offences.

Sgt Sue Bushell said: “Tamper proof screws are an extremely useful tool to help deter thieves and I hope that this initiative will help us to reduce this type of crime from occurring.

“We will be repeating this initiative throughout the coming months and I urge anyone who sees anything suspicious or who has any information about crime to contact us.”

Anyone who would like a set of number plate screws can contact their local neighbourhood policing team on 101.

I have a set of security screws that I got while working in Germany, that require a special tool to fit them. Instead of being like a crosshead/phillips/p
osidrive, they have only 3 lobes, like the roundel of a Mercedes Benz.
Anyone with a spare Merc that will fit these screws should let me know...

Anti-vandal screws (clutch head) have a specially designed head which can be screwed in but is impossible to unscrew. Suitable for fittings in public places to resist the attention of mindless vandals, crooks and thieves.

"Neighbourhood police officers handed out more than 80 tamper-proof screw kits and spoke to 150 motorists in the Audley and Bastwell areas of the town last Wednesday." Are these the only neighbourhoods in Blackburn now or are these the only areas that have had the plates stolen?

favouritism as usual other neighbourhoods left to fend for themselves as usual.

I had some perfectly good, well fitting plates till I went to a police sponsored security fitting. One of them rattles like mad now because they didn't fix it properly.

i guess its where the highest number of thefts have taken place, now wait for the thieves to strike further a field and then we will get offered the replacements

It's not favouritism but because it's another scam this particular part of the community is involved with for their own gains.
It's called going to the route cause!

Blackburn Police did this at B&Q earlier in the year. It was advertised on Radio Lancs for everybody to attend.
I don't know why the same old names have to put a racist slant on every article on here. Good on you Blackburn Police!

This is a good idea. How easy is it to obtain the removal tool? I mean could the plate thief carry one with them>?

"Motorists in Blackburn have been OFFERING special anti theft screws"?? I think the reporter means motorists have been offered anti theft screws. The Police are doing the offering the motorists the receiving. Proof reading at LT is a thing of the past.

Hang on a minute! Your the one crying racist NOT me. If car crime was more prevelent for scams in shadsworth i would say so, or if it was in a certain area of burnley then again i would say so!
Have we not to mention tactics like driving round town with a black ribbon hanging off the rear towing eye of your vehicle for whipcash purposes?
Why do you think CD's are hung from rear view mirrors? etc etc
Go climb back under a rock.

I've often wondered what the CD hung on the rear mirror is for but not heard of the black ribbon on the tow hook- please can you elaborate Your Ferret - I'm intrigued!
BB1 is the worst postcode in the country for cash for crash as far as insurers are concerned. And I'm guessing we're not talking the likes of the end of the postcode such as Wilpshire! Doesn't surprise me that Bastwell and Audley are hotspots for number plate theft. The enforcement agencies typically too scared to deal with the problem at source in case the race card is inevitably played! Less risky to just issue the security screws.....

Maybe someone might have decency to answer your qestion Bob who has a piece of ribbon hanging?
This pratice is now is now 5/6 years old and you don't see it too much now as it's been well and truly milked and all our insurance premiums have risen because of it yet 'paul the ocotopus' hasn't got what it takes to talk about it, let alone deal with the issue.

I'm led to believe black ribbon on the back means the driver is after getting a shunt in the back and getting a claim in, so fellow drivers, keep your distance as I'm probably going to slam on at any time.
