A CAMPAIGN to make Nelson ‘blooming marvellous’ is set to be launched by civic leaders tomorrow – and extra helping hands are being sought.
Town councillors are urging nature lovers and local traders to join the inaugural Nelson In Bloom team.
Multi-million pound improvements to the middle of Nelson – including the unveiling of the giant Shuttle artwork – are now finally complete and have garnered a number of design awards.
Now environmentalists are just as eager to see that the town is one day lauded as a natural wonder.
Town council chairman Coun Eileen Ansar said: “We want people from across the community to come and support our new working group and form Nelson In Bloom. There have been a number of good things happening in the town centre recently and now this is an opportunity for people to take even more pride in Nelson.”
Recently the town council assumed responsibility for a number of planters near the public transport interchange, Scotland Road and Market Street.
But it is hoped this coverage can be extended to all corners of the town centre, learning from the experiences of the town’s treasured parks. Green Flags have been awarded to both Walverden and Marsden Park this week and friends groups across Nelson have already signalled interest.
And with neighbouring Colne earning national attention for their efforts, and Barnoldswick and Barrowford aiming to follow in their footsteps, some friendly rivalry is on the cards in Pendle.
The launch meeting is at the town council offices, Scotland Road, from 7pm.

One large planted area near the Interchange belongs to Lancashire County Council. So, you might get those which Nelson look after all shipshape, but if the LCC don't do their job and they are notoriously slow when doing anything in Pendle is concerned then it will all be a waste of time.
