NORTH-west Euro MP John Whittaker has been appointed chairman of the UK Independence Party.
It is the first executive role with UKIP for Dr Whittaker, who is an economist at Lancaster University and a member of the Economic and Monetary Committee in the European Parliament.
The 61-year-old father-of-four, from Lancaster, said his priority was to free small businesses from overbearing EU regulations and unnecessary red tape.
He added: "I am honoured to be given this job. I believe UKIP has a vital role to play in British politics as the main opposition, at a time when you can't tell the difference between the other parties."
