HOMES in Darwen have been evacuated after a section of the River Darwen burst its banks.

The A666 Bolton Road is closed in both directions after heavy rain throughout the day.

Lancashire Telegraph readers have sent photos showing deep water from across the town.

Duckworth Street residents have reportedly been evacuated to Darwen Leisure Centre after their homes were flooded.

Emergency services are dealing with a high volume of calls to flooding incidents in the area.

All this rain is caused by all the takeaways burning fossil fuels trying to cook sub-standard G.M.O foods.

The Darwen flood has probably occurred as a result of the Borough failing to keep clean and clear the street drains. Years ago I remember often seeing the big tanker which would suck out leaves, litter and other debris that was clogging up the grates. I can not recall the last time I saw one of these in action. However, I could if asked, go and point out twenty drains that are fully blocked.

Agree with poster above, main drains are full to the top of crap. I know they had that big tanker out a few months ago after residents complained. The bridge near heys lane to cotton st was flooded last night and that must have blocked drain because rd dips down and obviously drainage at lowest point.

Well CBH no improvement from the flood in the 1960's then.

I was evacuated from the pub and had to find one on higher ground.... alas the taxi didn't turn up and i had to walk through the torrents.
Funnily enough, I wasn't thinking "the corporation's to blame for this" like they did in the 1970's".
Would I have a claim for a new pair of brogues ?

Interesting comments above - I don't suppose the flooding has anything to do with 5 inches of rain in 12 hours, the fact we mostly live in the bottom of a steep sided valley through which the main road runs directly over the River Darwen for much of its length.

All gullies feed to the River Darwen, the River Darwen Burst it's banks, how can that be the fault of blocked gullies ?

Drove home through it last night, kept on getting turned round as they blocked the roads off. Managed to get back to Darwen through Lower Darwen which was the first place to show flooding, strange. Anyway I must admit it was quite exciting negotiating the rapids.

This is nothing new as i can remember it flooding outside the old tramshed many times over the years, infact one year the water pressure coming up from the sewers was so powerfull that it was blowing manhole covers off.

I wasn't talking about the river darwen! I was mentioning higher ground areas that are flooded because drains blocked. The rain then goes in mass to the lowest point and this happens. Some of you believe we have been in a drought, it had rained here every other day bar a few recent weeks. If the structure in place can't handle that then someone is to blame. Sounds like maybe someone close to you!

From memory that is why they did the work at the Dove Lane culvert so there wouldn't be flooding again.

Hmm, it is worth remembering that new river level records have been set on the River Darwen, beating the previous records set in 2008/9.
.
And it is also worth remembering that road gullies drain in to the sewerage system which can only hold so much water. Yes indeed there may be blocked gullies in certain places that cause localised "large puddles" but hardly flooding. A blocked gully causes problems at any time, not just in periods of heavy rain.
.
Of course if you can prove that a blocked gully caused properties to flood then of course you can petition the magistrates that highways are failing in their duties under the Highways Act. However, highways are only liable for draining the highway - if the highway drainage is surcharged with run off from adjacent properties then good luck in proving that highways are at fault.

There'd have to be a lot more water and about 3 million tonnes of soap to get these filthy tramps scrubbed up clean.

Well the council were un blocking / clearing all the drains at the sight of flooding at 4pm today. I would bet the flooding wouldn't have happened if maintenance had been correct.

The flooding would still have happened whether the rains were cleared or not. As I said above, the River Darwen has reached a new high-water record yesterday - when was the last time Darwen flooded?
.
Four years ago? Oh yes, that would be the last time the river reached an all-time high then.
.
If blocked drains were the issue, the road would be flooded every time there is a heavy downpour. Clearly the problem isnt the drains.
.
However the councils actions are prudent, given the amount of silt and other debris that would have been washed in to the drainage system as a result of yesterdays deluge.
.
But you're right in that maintenance has suffered (where I live, only one of the 8 gullies is clear - but the only working one coped fine) and it is not just because of the cut backs, it is also down to bad planning and utilisation of resource.

The drains in hawkshaw ave are all blocked. The road was like a river all the water adding to that on the A666 I am sure all the other roads leading off are the same. If they had been kept clear I am sure the drains would have coped with the run off.

Have emailed council about all the blocked drains on my road leading to the A666 at Hollins asking for a sludge gulper to be deployed. Will be interesting to see if anything happens. It was like a river flowing passed my house Friday.
