Burnley teenager couldn't resist joyride in stolen Jag

A TEENAGER couldn't resist a joyride in a flash stolen Jaguar when it was driven to a house he was at in Burnley.

Craig Wilkinson, 18, was not used to cars of that class and reckoned it would be fun to go for a spin in the vehicle with his friends, a court was told.

The town's magistrates heard how the Jaguar X type had been taken in a £12,000 burglary at a house in Burnley in the early hours of that day.

The defendant, who is on a full-time painting and decorating college course, admitted allowing himself to be carried in a vehicle taken without consent, on April 19. Wilkinson, of Venice Avenue, Burnley, was sent to an attendance centre for nine hours.

Andrew Robinson, prosecuting, said the car had been taken overnight on April 18/19 and the break-in was discovered by the victims at about 5am. The Jaguar was then seen being driven at about 2.30pm on Eastern Avenue, in Burnley.

The vehicle, which had five occupants, went into a dead end. Wilkinson ran from the car and escaped but a police officer identified him as a passenger. The defendant accepted that he had been picked up in the vehicle and that he had been "driven around all afternoon."

Laura Heywood, for Wilkinson, said he was not involved in the burglary and the car had been brought to an address he was at.

The solicitor continued: " He doesn't come into contact with this type of vehicle. He thought it would be good fun, perhaps, to go for a short spin."
