Blaze at Pendle mill as workmen repair roof

A FIRE started on the roof of a mill while two workmen carried out repairs this morning.

The men were patching felt on the roof of Lower Clough Mill, in Pendle Street, Barrowford, when the blaze broke out at around 9.25am.

The workers managed to put the fire out using fire extinguishers.

Gary Ibbitson, watch manager at Nelson Fire Station, said: “When we arrived we could see plumes of black smoke, but they had already managed to put the fire out.

“It damaged a 20 sq metre section of roof and we went and cut it back and used thermal imaging cameras to check the damage.”

It is believed the fire started through burning equipment that is used in the process of the roofing work.

It was most likely started by a spark from Shaggy's camper.
