THE new Lion of Vienna song will be available on CD from next week to help raise funds for a Nat Lofthouse statue at the Reebok Stadium.
The Houghton Weavers, who have re-recorded their famous track, met with Bolton Wanderers boss Owen Coyle this week at the club’s training ground to tell him their memories of Nat.
The CD, which features the England Supporters Brass Band, will be available for £3 from the club shop at The Reebok and Wanderers will later make the song available for download for £1.
Fans have also contacted the club with ideas for fundraising, with pub and club nights, a skydive and a Three Peaks challenge among the fundraising schemes.
Wanderers club chaplain Phil Mason, who is helping to head-up the project, said: “This is a really encouraging start to the development of the lasting legacy to Nat Lofthouse.
“We would welcome more ideas to help get the whole community behind this project and involved in progressing this tribute.
“Over the next few weeks we shall be asking fans and the people of Bolton to consider the best image to use of Nat in shaping up the statue.”
Nat earned the nickname “The Lion of Vienna”
after he scored twice in a heroic performance in England’s dramatic 3- 2 win in Austria in May 1952.
Following his death a year ago, thousands of people lined the streets for his funeral in Bolton.
The club is looking to support and promote any ideas that fans might have in helping to keep the project moving.
Those who would like to donate to the Memorial Fund should go to natloft house.co.uk or send your fundraising ideas to feedback@bwfc.co.uk
