Jake Berry backs campaign for Rawtenstall to become Portas town

RAWTENSTALL could become one of 12 towns transformed under recommendations from retail expert Mary Portas.

Last year, the retail adviser, who made her name in the BBC show Mary Queen Of Shops, was asked by the Prime Minister to lead an independent review into the future of Britain’s high street.

She came up with The Portas Review, a 28-point list of recommendations to turn round the fortunes of Britain’s town centres.

And now, Local Government Minister Grant Shapps has launched the Portas Pilots competition, based on the report.

Under the scheme, 12 towns or cities can bid for a share of £1million to become Portas Pilot towns.

Rossendale MP Jake Berry said Rawtenstall fitted the bill as it had the highest rate of vacant shops in the country.

He said: “This pilot scheme is a great opportunity for us to take charge of our town centre and use local knowledge and vision to make real improvements. I want Rawtenstall to be at the forefront of a new wave of regeneration and growth on Britain’s high streets.

“That’s why I’m calling on local people and businesses to join me in pushing for Rawtenstall to be a Portas Town. Successful bids will have a clear vision for improvement and demonstrate strong support and commitment from our retailers, landlords, council and community.”

Rossendale Council leader, Coun Alyson Barnes said planning was already underway to put a bid together.

She said: “Rossendale Council is very keen to put in a bid and get Rawtenstall listed as one of the 12 pilot towns.

“We currently have a team of officers looking to see if we fit the criteria.

“Rawtenstall’s Chamber of Trade is also very keen to get on board and we will all soon be getting around the table to see how we can make this work.

“I don’t think there is a great amount of money in the project, as £1million will be spread among the 12 pilot towns but it will definitely go along way in boosting Rawtenstall’s profile and giving the Valley a new dynamic.

“Plus obviously any extra funding is always welcome.”

Rawtenstall is a sad place to be, better shopping at retail parks and bury is just down the road, improve transport to bury and everyone can go there and manchester Sorted!

Whenever I visit Rawtenstall I'm comforted by the cobbled streets, the hills, the straightforward appeal of small shops alive with convenience and deep, soothing here/now comfort and ease. Don't look for much of that in larger conurbs unless you have the legs.

Rawtenstall is excellent for shopping now and the prices are better than you would get in Bury or Manchester. And it has more ducks per square mile than either. And herons!

Bandwagon Berry does it again, jumping on the back of other people's hard work.

Rawtenstall is a sad example of what supermarkets do to small towns and should serve as a warning to them. It has a Tesco and an Asda which the small businesses simply can't compete with, hence the boarded up shops in the centre. Supermarkets do not cater for pedestrians so there is a lot more traffic in the town. What can this Portas woman do here and why is Berry supporting her? The answer is obvious....it Rawtenstall wants to thrive as a small town, small businesses need to be allowed to flourish and supermarkets confined to large towns.

The boarded up centre is currently being demolished- something that Bandwagon Berry venomously opposed, and is even wasting public money referring it to The Audit Commission; bit of a Bandwagon pile up for the young man. I have a lot of sympathy for him really as it can't be easy representing Rossendale and Darwen from a schooner in Portsmouth harbour.

Instead of just regurgitating Mr Berrys press releases please can the LET occasionally remember that journalism involves challenging blatant inaccuracies. The only way in which Rawtenstall town centre can come any way close to having the highest % of empty shops in the whole country is if you count all the boarded up ones in the Valley centre!! Jake obviously doesn't do irony otherwise he would have picked a different bandwagon to jump on. If you take the concrete monstrosity out of the equation, Rawtenstall is arguably a lot better than many other town centres in terms of the (non food) retail offer
