Shoppers are braving the arctic temperatures as snow has hit Bolton.
It started falling at around midday and a light covering can be seen on cars and streets.
Temperatures are expected to fall to -2 and drivers are being urged to take extra care as ice is likely to develop later.
The Met Office is forecasting that snow will turn to rain in some areas.
A spokesman added: “As skies then clear after dark, widespread icy patches will develop across parts of northern England.
“The public are advised to take extra care and that the ice and snow is likely to lead to travel disruption.”
Road users are being advised to check the weather forecast before travelling.
A spokesman for the Highways Agency, which is responsible for motorways and other major roads, said: “We are working closely with the Met Office to monitor weather conditions, maintain safe roads and reliable journeys.
“Drivers are advised to plan for their journey before they set out, checking the forecast, road conditions and to leave extra time if travel conditions are poor or to delay their journey if the weather becomes severe.”
Public transport is also facing delays due to the snow.
A spokesman for First buses said: “Due to the recent snowfall across our operating area, some journey delays are to be expected.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this bad weather.“
