A MOUNTAIN rescue team is urging people to support its fundraising efforts by climbing the world’s highest free-standing mountain.

Ken Crossley, of Rossendale and Pendle Mountain Rescue Team (RPMRT), is offering people a chance to trek up Mount Kilimanjaro.

Everyone who takes on the challenge will have to raise £4,500 through sponsorship, of which £2,000 will be donated to RPMRT.

Ken said: “Kilimanjaro is an amazing trekking peak and sees walkers make their journey through lush rain forests, alpine scrub, then past glaciers to reach the roof of Africa, and the top of the world’s highest free-standing mountain at a lung-busting 5,895 metres.

“The trip is not particularly aimed at RPMRT members but at people in the community who wish to take part in a once in a lifetime challenge whilst raising money for a good cause.”

Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania, is the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 metres above sea level.

Members of RPMRT are in the process of raising £500,000 to pay for a new base in Manchester Road, Haslingden.

Last year team leader Andy Simpson announced they had reached the half-way point.

The Kilimanjaro expedition is expected to take place in February 2013.
