The Tories gained a seat from the Liberal Democrats on Ribble Valley Borough Council last night - by just four votes.

Conservative Party candidate Ian Brown took the Salthill ward seat from the Lib Dems' Simon O'Rourke by 208 votes to 204.

UKIP's Steve Rush was in third with 158 with Labour's Mike Rose in fourth and final place with 40.

The Conservatives now hold 34 seats on Ribble Valley Borough Council to the Liberal Democrats' 5 and one independent.

However, in the by-election for the same ward on Clitheroe Town Council, roles were reversed.

Mr O'Rourke triumphed with 212 votes to Mr Brown's 204. Mr Rush secured 155 votes and Mr Rose 39.

The by-elections were caused after Liberal Democrat Councillor David Berryman stepped down from both councils due to work commitments.
