Authority announces new recycling centre

PLANS to open a new recycling centre in Bolton have been announced — as proposals to close another are given the go ahead.

The Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority has confirmed in principle it will close a number of sites across the region including one at Union Road, Tonge Moor, and the decision is expected to be finalised in June.

The authority also wants to build a new Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) at the former CMP Batteries in Over Hulton.

If that goes ahead, the tips at Blackhorse Street, Blackrod, and Lester Road in Little Hulton, could close.

Horwich and Blackrod Cllr Ray Barrow, who is on the GMWDA, said: “Nothing had been submitted to Bolton Council yet about the Over Hulton site.

“The GMWDA now owns the land, but they have not started on the designs or anything yet.”

Household Waste Recycling Centres are being earmarked for closure due to budget constraints.

Cllr Neil Swannick, chairman of the GMWDA said: “I don’t want to close any sites at all, but we have been asked to make savings where we can and to use our money to the best advantage.”

The news comes as green groups are urging the Government to do more to boost recycling.

Bolton Friends of the Earth were in Deansgate on Saturday, campaigning to halve the amount of rubbish that goes in bins across the borough. Elizabeth Shepherd, Co-ordinator of Bolton Friends of the Earth, said: “People in Bolton are keen to get the rubbish out of their bins—and we’re all frustrated by having to bin unnecessary packaging and the stuff the council doesn’t recycle.

“Now, we want the Government to halve the rubbish that has to go into our black bin bags by 2020.

“More recycling doesn’t mean more sorting, the best collection services are the simplest for householders and the most cost-effective for our council.”
